Abstract/Contents:"Two formulations of deltamethrin (Deltagard^D]T^D]M) were appplied at two or three rates to golf course fairway turf in the spring of 1999 to determine efficacy against annual bluegrass weevil. This test was conducted at Sleeply Hollow C.C., Scarboro, NY. All plots were treated on 19 Apr (sunny, calm, air temp 48°F, soil temp 48°F at 2 inches). Soil pH was 6.3, buffered pH 6.6, CEC 24.3 Meq/100 g. The calcium to magnesium ratio was ca. 4.5:1. Water pH was 5.4. One set of plots was also treated on 4 May (split application): low overcast, intermittent showers, air temp 55°F. Treatment plots were 6 by 6 ft, replicated 5 times, and arranged in a CRB. In addition two sets of plots received an additional application on 27 Apr (sunny, light north breeze <5 mph, air temp 44°F, soil temp 40°F). All liquid applications were applied with a watering can using 3 quarts water per plot. Granular products were applied using a glass shaker jar with perforated lid. Plots were watered in with 0.1 to 0.2 inch irrigation within 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 2 Jun by removing 12 cores, 1.85 inches diam, from near the center of each plot. Cores were transproted to Amherst, MA, where they were broken apart manually and inspected under 10X magnification. Insect counts were recorded for 3 cores at a time (4 observations per replication, 20 total observations). While all stages were recorded, only larvae, prepupae, and pupae (labelled as "larvae" in the table below) were included in statistical analyses, because teneral adults are much more mobile than the immature stages. The insect populations in the untreated plots were well above the commonly accepted threshold populations (30-60 larvae/sq.ft.) for this insect, and some of the untreated plots showed evidence of insect feeding activity. Every treatment reduced populations significantly relative to the untreated check. There was no difference between "split applications" and single applications of the higher rate of Deltagard SC. The lower rate of Deltagard 25WG and the Dursban Pro application had significantly higher populations than any of the other treatments.
