Abstract/Contents:"The long term objective of our mixture projects is to determine the practicality of maintaining turf type tall fescue in mixture with Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass under varied management conditions." Treatments included different mixtures of tall fescue with other species, irrigation versus no irrigation, 7/8-inch versus 2-inch mowing height, and simulated traffic. Seed mixtures of tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass were at least 80% tall fescue by weight, and on average established to 55% tall fescue and 40% Kentucky bluegrass. Major findings of the study include: turf-type tall fescue cultivars were more competitive with Kentucky bluegrass than dwarf tall fescue cultivars; perennial ryegrass tended to dominate other species in mixtures; mowing had no effect on species composition, but irrigation did affect species composition in some years; disease resistance effects were apparent in some mixtures; and traffic had no long term effect on the species mixtures.
