Abstract/Contents:"Crushed olive pits and chicken manure were tested in constructed rootzones with native sand and soil at two locations, as materials indigenous to Cyprus for sports turf. Rootzone treatments, 36 cm deep on a 7-cm gravel drainage field, were: 100% native soil(So); 95% So, 5% chicken manure(CM); 90% So, 10% CM; 75% unwashed sand(Sa), 10% CM, 15% So; and 75% Sa, 10% crushed olive pits(OP), 15% So. The turfgrass mixture was 20% Lolium perenne L., 15% Cynodon dactylon L., 50% Festuca arundinacea Schreb. and 15% Poa pratensis L. Sa with OP performed best at both sites with water infiltration 1.44 cm minā»Ā¹ turfgrass colour, uniformity, and shoot density averaging 8.6 (9=best), with 87% cover. Water infiltration in So at Nicosia was 0.62 cm minā»Ā¹ and 1.31 cm minā»Ā¹ at Hellenic Mine. Its turfgrass quality ratings at the two sites averaged 7.0 with 77% cover. Water infiltration of Sa with CM was slow at both sites, 0.01 and 0.08 cm minā»Ā¹, respectively. It had fair turfgrass quality ratings at Nicosia, averraging 6.6 with 51% cover, compared to best ratings at Hellenic Mine, averaging 8.7 with 90% cover. The two treatments of So with CM performed poorly."
