Abstract/Contents:"Empirical models that generate turfgrass evapotranspiration (ET) estimates are commonly used to guide irrigation, although a thorough evaluation of the accuracy of these models has not been carried out in the Midwestern USA. We evaluated seven models by comparing empirically-estimated ET with turfgrass ET measured using small lysimeters under well-watered conditions. The Doorenbos-Pruitt-Makkink (DOOR), FAO-Penman (FAOP), and Penman (PEN) models provided the best (RĀ² = 0.858 to 0.906) ET estimates for Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy cv. Midlawn, Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. cv. Prairie and Zoysia japonica Steud. cv. Meyer maintained at 4.5cm. The Blaney-Criddle (BC), DOOR, and PEN models provided the highest correlation coefficients for three tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) cultivars maintained at 6.4 or 7.6cm (RĀ² = 0.415 to 0.792). All models provided relatively poor (RĀ² = 0.087 to 0.525) ET estimates for Lolium perenne L. cv. Gator maintained at 1.2 cm.and Zoysia japonica cv. Meyer maintained at 2.5cm.
