Abstract/Contents:"The ability to absorb nitrogen (N) is an important trait to consider in the breeding and utilisation of turfgrasses. This would be especially true in the development of a new turf species, such as Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm., expected to perform well under low N conditions. Information on N uptake efficiency of B. dactyloides is lacking. Comparisons of N uptake and N uptake efficiency were made between 22 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) entries of B. dactyloides using a hydroponics greenhouse system. Nitrate-N depeletion was measured at 192 hours after plants had been transferred from either non-N limiting (210 mg l₋₁ nitrate-N) or N-limiting (21 mg l₋₁ nitrate-N) half-strength Hoagland's solution into Hoagland's solution containing 210 mg l₋₁ nitrate-N. Significant differences in total N uptake and N uptake efficiency (mg N g₋₁ root dry weight) were found to exist between entries. These parameters increased folllowing N-limiting pre-treatment indicating that N stress promotes N uptake and uptake efficiency when N becomes available again. A negative relationship existed between N uptake efficiency and total root weight."
