Abstract/Contents:During an eight year study (1975-1982), 12 preemergent herbicides were evaluated to prevent poa annua ( Poa annua L.) and annual grasses smooth crabgrass [ Digitaria ischaemum (Shreb.) Muhl.] with some fall panicum [Panicum dicotomiflorum Michx] in three bentgrass putting green areas. The cultivars were Kingstown velvet bentgrass (Agrostis canina L.) and Penncross and Emerald creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). Herbicide effectiveness was based on control of the weedy grasses and quality ratings of the bentgrass cultivars. Bensulide safely controlled all weedy grasses, except one year (1978) when Kingstown had a lowered quality rating. Benefin and DCPA prevented annual grasses, but were less effective for Poa annua control. Benefin did not reduce turf quality while DCPA was safe to use on Penncross but occassionally reduced Emerald and Kingstown quality. Oxadiazon controlled annual grasses and in two of three cultivars controlled poa annua, however oxadiazon reduced turf quality. Siduron did not control any weeds. Butralin, diethatyl, HOE-22870, and prosulfalin reduced turf quality at sometime during the study. Ethofumesate and pendimethalin showed potential to prevent annual grasses while ethofumesate and chlorsulfuron showed potential to reduce turf quality. Penncross creeping bentgrass appeared to be less susceptible to weedy grass invasion and more tolerant of herbicides than either Kingstown velvet bentgrass or Emerald creeping bentgrass.
