Abstract/Contents:"A good nutrition program is your best defense against most pests." Golf course putting or bowling greens require different fertility programs than fairways or areas of less intensive use. Discusses function, effects, and suggested levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and trace elements (micronutrients). To discourage legumes in turf and seedhead inhibition, especially Poa annua, lower rates of phosphorus should be used. Phosphorus is required in small amounts for energy metabolism in plants. Potassium prevents plant diseases by stimulating growth of firmer or harder tissues. It is also involved in regulating water movement and transpiration within the plant. Sulfur is essential mainly for protein synthesis, but high levels of application will reduce the severity of Fusarium patch disease, Ophiobolus patch disease, and reduce populations of Poa annua and increase bentgrass populations. Both calcium and magnesium are required for normal growth and metabolism. Magnesium is required in much smaller amounts than calcium and is a structural part of the chlorophyll molecule. Formulated fertilizers can be prepared in a ratio that will satisfy most turfgrass needs. This ratio is formed as ratio-formula-intensity.
