Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes the progress of a study examining the effects of inorganic amendments on sand-based rootzone mixes. In the initial study, "three very uniform sands (coarse, medium, and fine) were amended with Irish sphagnum peat, Profile®, Greenschoice®, Isolite®, and Ecolite®...The results indicate that the inorganic amendments did improve soil moisture holding capacity, but much less so than did the peat...Ecolite® and Profile® were very efficient at retarding ammonium leaching...The field installation consists of 60 mini-putting greens...Soil gases were measured throughout the summer. In all cases rootzone oxygen was relatively high." Soil microorganism populations increased during the months following seeding, and were steady thereafter. |
