Abstract/Contents:Discusses a study whose objectives are to "determine the extent of nitrate pollution originating from fertilized turfgrass systems on golf courses," including "estimates of the amounts of N recovered in grass clippings, accumulating and leaching in soil, and lost to adjacent streams and lakes during fertilization and growth periods"; and to "formulate N budgets and environmental models to predict the fate of applied N in the three locations." Provides a justification and a description of the project. Details the research plan for 1999, including assessing fertilizer efficacy, monitoring of nutrient pollution in surface waters, determining downward movement of nitrate and ammonium in the soil, and measuring the concentration of nitrate in the subsurface water flow. Also summarizes new research (quantifying organic matter and organic N in soils in managed turfgrass systems, and comparing soil profiles of turfgrass systems of varying ages). Describes projects in other states similar to this one, and states the financial impact and budget explanation of this project.
