Abstract/Contents:The effects of hay-making in July (1), hay-making in September (2) and hay-making in July and September (3) on unmanured grassland were compared with the effect of abandoning formerly manured, cut and grazed grassland from 1973 onwards. Populations of Holcus lanatus at one extreme and Ranunculus repens, Agrostis stolonifera and Poa trivialis at the other predominated alternately. Seedlings emerged in spring and under all the management practices. Seedlings emerged in autumn according to the hay-making regime. More seedlings emerged in regimes (2) and (3) than in regime (1). Relatively more dicotyledonous species reached the juvenile stage in (2) while relatively more monocotyledonous species reached this stage in (1).
