Abstract/Contents:In trials in 1972-3 at 650 m alt. at Czarny Potok near Krynica, mountain grassland dominated by Festuca pratensis, Poa trivialis and Agropyron repens was either unfertilized or was given 0, 60, 120, 180 or 240 kg N + 80 kg P2O5 + 100 kg K2O/ha at the start of vegetative growth. Swards were cut twice annually and the 1st cut was taken when the dominant grasses were at the flowering stage. DM yields, chemical composition and nutrient uptake were examined at tillering, stem elongation, heading, flowering (1st cut) and at the 2nd cut and the dependence of DM accumulation on rainfall and temperature was also determined. DM yields increased with increasing temperature during the vegetative season reaching a maximum at heading in 1972 and at flowering in '73. Yields also tended to increase with increasing rates of applied N up to 180 kg/ha. In 1972 maximum yields at the 1st and 2nd cuts were 6.29 and 2.43 t DM/ha, respectively, compared with 7.08 and 2.74 t in 1973. In 1972 DM yields at heading were 74-83% of those at the 1st cut at flowering. At the various rates of fertilizer application, uptakes of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Na were 90-105, 77-96, 69-110, 78-95, 77-96 and 70-105%, respectively, of those at the 1st cut. It was concluded that it might be feasible to take the 1st cut for hay on natural grasslands earlier than at the traditional cutting date.
