| Abstract/Contents: | A granular fertilizer product containing 2,4-D (1.5 lb. ae/A) and mecoprop (1.5 lb. ae/A) and an inert carrier granular 2,4-D (1.5 lb. ae/A) and dicamba (0.25 lb. ae/A) product were applied to a poorly nourished weedy turf sward. The inert carrier product was applied with and without a separate 34-4-4 fertilizer application. Best control of dicot weeds was achieved when a fertilizer was applied at the same time as the inert carrier product or when the combination product was used. Better weed control resulted when the product was applied to wet turf and weed foliage than when applied to dry foliage. A single fall application of the inert carrier product gave more effective control of common dandelion than a single spring application (89% vs. 75%). Both fertilizer and dicot weed control applications increased turfgrass density from 40% at the start to 90% after two applications of the combination product. Turfgrass density in the untreated plots decreased to 15% during the same period. |
