Abstract/Contents: | The establishment of pasture communities on industrial wasteland is discussed. In all cases some sort of soil treatment such as organic amendment, mineral fertilizer or household sewage was required. Plants capable of high productivity on waste land included Agropyron spp., Festuca spp., Bromus spp., and Melilotus spp. and Puccinellia distans and Agropyron intermedium were tolerant of toxic substrates. Delayed rates of growth and development were evident in waste land but grass communities produced 1.65-3.00 t/ha of above-ground biomass on waste land, compared with 3.00-7.30 t for legumes. |
