| Abstract/Contents: | Trials were initiated from 1978 to 1980 to evaluate pre- and post-emergent herbicides for the selective control of prostrate spurge in bentgrass lawn and putting green areas. The tolerance of several cool season grasses to selected postemergent herbicides was also investigated. Effectiveness of treatments was based on percent spurge control and turfgrass injury. Of seven preemergent herbicides tested DCPA provided the best results. Siduron provided some spurge control while oxadiazon injured velvet bentgrass in a putting green area. No antagonistic effects were noted from combination pre- and post-emergent treatments in putting green turf. The most effective postemergent herbicide with the least potential for bentgrass injury was bromoxynil. There was some variability in the results of other post-treatments from one test to another. The combination of 2,4-D plus mecoprop provided more consistant results than that of 2,4-D plus either dicamba or dichlorprop. The experimental material DPX-4189 appeared more promising for spurge control with safety to the grass than did DPX-4065. Kentucky bluegrass, red fescue and several bentgrasses were found to be tolerant to DPX-4189 and especially to bromoxynil. |
