Abstract/Contents: | "The Zoysia genus is indigenous to Pacific-Rim countries extending from 50° N latitude, in Northern Japan, to New Zealand (Watson and Dallwitz, 1992). Native Zoysia species have been collected from diverse environmental conditions at elevations from sea level to 10,000 ft, in soil textures ranging from sand to clay, with soil acidities of pH 3.5 to 9.0, in highly saline soils, and in various moisture levels, from flooded areas and deserts. The genetic diversity within this genus provides considerable promise for adaptation and utilization within our own turf industry. 'Meyer' zoysiagrass was introduced to the turfgrass industry in the 1950's, and 'Emerald' in the 1960's. Very little attention was given to this genus concerning its turf potential until the 1980's. 'El Toro' was released by University of California in 1984, and 'Belair' by the United States Department of Agriculture-ARS in 1985. More recently considerable attention in the turf industry has lead to the development of new experimental varieties of zoysiagrass. Twenty-four varieties have been included in the 1991 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program zoysiagrass trials. The trials were established at 40 locations across the United States to provide information on their potential adaption and utility." |
