Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes a study whose objectives are to "determine the extent of nitrate pollution originating from fertilized turfgrass systems on golf courses," and "formulate N budgets and environmental models to predict the fate of applied N in the two river basins." The results show a trend of "the estimated amount of N recovered in clippings exceeding the amounts of N applied...Although preliminary, the results do indicate that fertilizer-use efficiency by turfgrass systems is higher than that of field crops...At this time we have no indication of large scale runoff into adjacent streams and lakes at any of the research locations." Proposes future research to determine whether organic nitrogen is a significant source of nitrate pollution in groundwater. |
