Abstract/Contents:"Four field studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of post-emergence herbicide treatments on grasses and broadleaves in corn in 1986. Two separate field studies were conducted in Phelps, New York by the author, one in Valatia, new York by Dr. R.R. Hahn and one in Deerfield, Massachusetts by Dr. P.C. Bohwmik. Each study was set up in a completely randomized block design with four replications for each treatment. In Phelps the plots were 3 x 12 m and each treatment was applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer delivering 187 L/ha. The plots in Valatia were 3 x 7 m and each treatment was applied with a compressed ir plot sprayer delivering 280 L/ha. In Deerfield the plots were 3 x 6 m and the treatments were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer delivering 187 L/ha. Alachlor (2.2 kg/ha) and atrazine (1.7 kg/ha) treatments were applied preemergence (PRE) and early-post (EPO). Atrazine (2.2 kg/ha) and crop oil concentrate (2.3 kg/ha), cyanazine (2.2 kg/ha), and atrazine (1.7 kg/ha) and cyanazine (2.2 kg/ha) were applied as standard EPO treatments. Tridiphane (0.6 kg/ha) and atrazine (1.7 kg/ha) and crop oil concentrate (2.3 L/ha) was applied EPO and late post-emergence (LPO). Applications of atrazine (1.7 kg/ha) and crop soil were followed by an application 6-8 days later (LLP) of atrazine (1.1 kg/ha) and crop oil concentrate (2.3 L/ha). From each separate field study efficacy data for one grass species, application dates, and size of grasses are represented in Table 1. At the first site in Phelps (loamy sand) there was a heavy infestation of yellow foxtail [Setaria glauca (L.) Beauv.] distributed uniformly across the field. All treatments provided excellent control of yellow foxtail except for cyanazine alone and the LPO treatment of tridiphane and atrazine. A moderate infestation of fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx.) was evenly distributed across the second site in Phelps (loamy sand). Three treatments provided acceptable control of fall panicum; tridiphane & atrazine (EPO), cyanazine and atrazine, and cyanazine followed by alachlor and atrazine (EPO). The test site in Valatia (Hoosic gravelly loam) had a uniform stand of large crabgrass [Digitaria sanquinalis (L.) Scop.]. Atrazine and cyanazine provided excellent control followed by tridiphane and atrazine (EPO), cyanazine and alachlor and atrazine (EPO). At the Deerfield test site (Hadley fine sandy loam) there was an even distribution of fall panicum. Excellent control was recorded for the alachlor and atrazine (PRE), cyanazine and atrazine and cyanazine treatments followed by tridiphane and atrazine (EPO) then the split application of tridiphane and atrazine. This study demonstrated that the efficacy of EPO applications of tridiphane and atrazine and atrazine and cyanazine were similar. The data also indicates that the efficacy of a LPO application of tridiphane and atrazine can be increased by a follow-up application of atrazine and crop oil concentrate."
