Abstract/Contents:Callus induction, maintenance and shoot regeneration in the Agrostis palustris [stolonifera] cultivars Emerald, Seaside, Penncross and Penneagle are described with tabulated data. Callus cultures of the 4 cultivars were exposed to high temperatures (35 to 45degC) or high salinity (3-6%) levels to select for cell lines resistant to these stresses. Some cell lines were exposed to UV radiation. Callus exposed to 45deg became necrotic and died, that exposed to 35deg showed little growth but that exposed to UV and then 35deg showed more promise (16.8% of the lines were resistant to 35deg). Calli selected as heat tolerant were subsequently regenerated, with Penneagle giving the best results. Similar results were obtained in selecting cell lines for salt tolerance.
