| Abstract/Contents: | In order to obtain a full spring regrowth of a sports turf sward which is used in winter, it is necessary to begin a timely regrowth process as soon as possible in the spring. The nutrient supply is especially important in this process. However, the correct application timing of the nutrients is somewhat uncertain, especially as far as regional fertilizer recommendations are concerned. Thus, we tested the use of temperature sums to determine the timing for the first spring fertilization. The temperature sum is calculated from the average daily temperatures starting January 1, negative temperature not being considered. The following effects were recorded: equal temperature sums were obtained at very different dates in various years; the fertilization at T=100 °C resulted in the earliest regreening of the sward; the later the application, the more rapid the improvement of the quality; and, there was practically no nitrogen leaching from earlier fertilizer applications. It is recommended to apply the spring fertilizer dose to sports turf when a temperature sum of 100-150°C has been reached. |
