Abstract/Contents:Presents three case studies in which disturbed and polluted land was restored via the construction of golf courses. Describes the restoration of an industrial wasteland on the shore of Little Traverse Bay effected by the Bay Harbor Company, which planned a resort hotel, housing and a golf course for the site. "In essence, the developers were willing to risk private capital to clean up a mess they had not created, in exchange for the state's flexibility in granting permits and tolerating creative efforts to ameliorate the effects of the historic pollution." Crosswater golf course was built at the Sunriver Resort near Bend, Oregon on land that was "formerly a combination of heavily grazed meadows, degraded stream banks, and logged-over forest tracts." The Reserve, a golf community in Costa Mesa, California, is located between two sensitive desert sites. The course was built on land scarred by gravel excavation and dumping. Obstacles encountered during the construction of each of these courses are discussed in detail.
