| Abstract/Contents: | "Several creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) clones from a seashore population were compared for salt tolerance and ion distribution within the plant following growth with 0, 100 or 200mM NaCl added to solution cultures Salt tolerance differences were found among genotypes, particularly when tolerance was measured by root elongation. Significant ion concentration differences were found among several shoot organs. Expanding tissues had lowest Na+, Na+/K+ and Cl- levels in the shoot. Leaf sheaths had higher ion concentrations than leaf blades, particularly in a relatively tolerant clone. These data support the hypothesis that salt tolerance in this population is associated with an ability to control ion compartmentation at the organ level." |
