Abstract/Contents:"Biologically-engineered drainage channel liners are quickly becoming the tool of choice to abate the severe erosion and channel scour found in areas experiencing high shear stress. The extreme force and massive flooding brought by Hurricane Georges' winds impacting the United States' Gulf Coast in September 1998, tested the limits of both geosynthetic and rock riprap channel liners. Despite low vegetative density through the geosynthetic composite turf reinforcement matting (C-TRM) used in the study channel, the matting far outperformed rock riprap underlain with filter fabric. Wind speeds in excess of 117 km per hour induced widespread damage of the channel including compete [complete] failure of the riprap channel lining and significant removal of soil material from beneath the filter fabric. The geosynthetic C-TRM, however, remained completely intact with no observable channel scour from beneath the matting."
