| Abstract/Contents: | "Identifying natural variation within perennial ryegrass collections will allow breeders to make informed crosses between a narrow breeding base of adapted U.S. varieties and naturalized worldwide populations. The objectives of this research were to 1) characterize genetic variation within and among 21 USDA perennial ryegrass accessions, and 2) characterize relationships using RAPD markers and forage traits in 347 perennial ryegrass accessions. Twenty-one populations from seven European countries were analyzed using Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA). Over 90% of total observed variation can be explained by variation within populations. Among populations within countries explained 8.6% and among countries explained 1.27% of the total variation. Analyses of 347 worldwide populations will provide a more accurate estimate of existing diversity and genetic relationships of perennial ryegrass." |
