Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes a study whose objective was "to compare turf performance and soil microbial activity" in sand and sand/peat sportfields. The effects of chitin, mycorrhizae and compost top dressings in each field were also assessed. The growth in the sand/peat field exceeded that in the sand field in dry root mass and turf density. "Generally, it seemed that the peat provided a better environment for the buildup of microbes, in particular beneficial ones, and may be one of the major factors in the better growth of the turfgrass." The chitin and compost/chitin treatments resulted in the most above ground growth, the healthiest turf, and the least number of sites infected with red thread. "The results are preliminary, but promising in support of incorporating peat, or other organic matter into sand based playing fields, followed by top dressing with chitin." |
