| Abstract/Contents: | "Studies in the United States have been carried out relating turfgrass impact absorption characteristics and traction to vegetative cover, soil physical properties and maintenance procedures. However no studies have been conducted in the U.S. to relate these obective tests for surface properties to player perception of what constitutes a quality surface. A pilot study was conducted to investigate the relationship between surface hardness, traction (grip), ball rebound and ball roll with player performance for soccer in which playing quality standards for soccer might be developed. The study was carried out at 10 sites, university and semi professional events, with some sites beign visited twice. Measurements of field characteristics were made several hours prior to a game event. Questionnaires were provided the players which rated the field for hardness, traction, ball rebound and ball roll directly after the game. Classes were chosen for each test with player response placed in cells as a percentage of respondents for each class. Data were analyzed using the chi square. The chi square was significant with a distinct pattern of the responses arising in three out of the four tests. The results of the study show that quality standards for playing surfaces can be developed in this manner." |
