Abstract/Contents:"Visual evaluation of turfgrass quality requires experienced personnel and may be subjective. Optical sensing of plant reflectance offers objective quality measurements and requires no turf experience. The objectives of this study were to compare visual assessment and optical sensing for evaluation of turfgrass quality. Three human evaluators collected monthly visual ratings of the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program tall fescue and creeping bentgrass trials at Oklahoma State University in 1999. These visual ratings were compared with results acquired using vehicle-mounted optical sensors. Evaluations acquired using optical sensing were highly correlated with average visual ratings. Optical sensing demonstrated improved consistency and sensitivity compared with visual techniques. Optical sensing delivered fast, reliable turf assessment and deserves acceptance as a supplemental or replacement technique for turf quality evaluation."
