Abstract/Contents: | "The conventional method of putting green construction uses a sand mixture above a gravel sub-layer designed to create a perched water table and increase sand water retention. A laboratory study evaluated the effect of gravel size on water retention of three sand sizes with or without peat moss. Sands with or without a gravel layer were packed in columns (7.6 diam.) to a 30-cm sand depth, saturated by capillarity, and drained for 24 h. Sand size and peat moss addition had the greatest effect on water retention. All gravel sizes generally resulted in similar average water retention. However, significantly greater water retention occurred in sands lacking the gravel layer, or in rootzones placed over gravel treated to be hydrophobic. This decrease in water content with gravel suggests that capillary continuity exists between the sand and the gravel, and that the gravel layer decreases the height of the perched water table." |
