Abstract/Contents: | "The foundational principle for development of superior drought resistance in Festuca arundinacea Schreb. is to focus on genetic based tolerance to soil chemical/physical factors that limit root growth/viability. A field screening protocol will be discussed that incorporates multiple root stresses. A study of 12 ecotypes screened through various cycles will be presented as an example of the progress that can be achieved. Based on 5 field drought events, UGA ecotypes(7) exhibited percent leaf firing, as a measure of overall drought resistance under field dry-down, of 10(best) to 29%(ave. 17%) versus 28 to 38%(ave. 32%) for 5 commercial cultivars. Other characteristics will also be discussed." |
