Abstract/Contents: | "Anaerobic soils limit the amount of free oxygen available in the root zone and hence will impede root development and restrain nutrient availability for turf growth. An on-range study was conducted on existing greens to investigate the influence of CO₂ content in the root zone on turf quality. Nine greens were monitored periodically since August 1998. On each green, five 1 m diameter circular plots were randomly selected for conducting the experiment. Data collected from each plot included turf quality, CO₂ content, and physical and chemical properties of the rooting mixtures. Results revealed that CO₂ content in the root zone increased as water content increased. Results also showed that turf quality declined when CO₂ content reached above 5% in the summer season. Cultivation could initially increase oxygen in the root zone, but the benefits decreased with time." |
