Abstract/Contents:"In agroecosystems microbial biomass (MB) is a key variable controlling soil organic matter dynamics, functioning primarily as an agent for the transformantion and cycling of carbon and associated plant nutrients within the soil. Knowledge about the distribution of MB is critical to understanding its functions. However, we have limited knowledge on both the functions and distribution of MB within highly managed ecosystems, such as golf greens. Although limited by sandy textures, stable microaggregation was greater in greens with biomass accumulations above 65 nmol lipid phosphate g⁻¹ oven dry soil. We observed a nonlinear plateau of MB within 43 golf greens between 3 and 25 years. The soil was further separated into sand and particulate organic matter (POM) fractions using Na metatungstate. In older greens a large portion of MB was located within POM of density < 2.3 g ml⁻¹. In this paper, accumulation of MB in relation to 1) accumulation of POM, 2) amount of MB per unit mass of sand and POM fractions, and 3) accumulation of humic substances will be discussed."
