Abstract/Contents:Summarizes a project inspired by an article in Northwest Turfgrass Topics written by Tara McLeod, Sports Turf Agronomist at the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute. The project explores "the benefits of Iron including weed control and fusarium control." In the weed control portion of the project, iron sulphate was used to control Veronica filiformis, or creeping speedwell. Three plots were selected, each containing >95% weed coverage. Half of each plot was treated; the other half was used as a control. After application, weeds would first turn gray, then gradually die back completely until grass would emerge; the grass would initially be darker in color. Soon afterwards, new weeds would emerge. Explains why reemergence of the weeds occurred. In the disease control part of the project, three fairways were selected according to high disease incidence in previous years. The entire fairway was treated, except for a number of control strips on each fairway. "Compiling monthly applications through the year did nothing to prevent the fusarium, so my recommendations would be to start the applications just prior to disease prone times or once the disease is active...these applications were also very effective in eliminating Red Thread."
