| Abstract/Contents: | Postemergent crabgrass herbicides; DSMA, MSMA, PMA and siduron, were applied at excessive rates onto 'Tufcote' bermudagrass to evaluate phytotoxicity, recuperative time and rooting effects. Severe phytotoxicity was incurred by MSMA (4.0, 6.0 lb ai/A), DSMA (7.4, 11.1 lb ai/A), and PMA (13.2 ox ai/A). Phytotoxicity was much more severe when applications were made at 95 deg. F than at 85 deg. F or 88 deg. F. Turf recovered from injury induced by MSMA, DSMA and PMA within 2 weeks, conversely, phytotoxicity caused by sifuron progressed over time. Herbicides did not appear to cause any significant, deleterious effects upon rooting. 'Penncross' bentgrass was more prone to phytotoxicity and recuperated more slowly than bermudagrass. Excellent control of mature crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.) plants was achieved with DSMA (3.7 lb ai/A) and MSMA (2.0 lb ai/A), but not with PMA (4.4 oz ai/A) or siduron (8.0 lb ai/A). |
