Abstract/Contents:"Infrared video thermography was used to observe freezing events in cold-acclimated and non-acclimated perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne) and supina bluegrass (Poa supina). Mature turf plants were grown hydroponically for four weeks at non-acclimating (20/15 C) or acclimating (5/2 C) day/night temperatures. An imaging radiometer was used to view exothermic events in whole plants as temperatures were decreased from 2 C to -10 C. Each tissue type exhibited a unique exotherm. Root systems always froze first, followed by crowns, then shoots and leaves. Freezing occurred bidirectionally in roots but was acropetal in crowns, shoots, and leaves. Cold-acclimated supina bluegrass possessed the greatest intrinsic barriers to ice propagation, particularly in the crown. Ice-nucleating bacteria placed plant surfaces did not induce freezing of plant tissues."
