Abstract/Contents: | "Turfgrass wear tolerance may be increased by management practices that influence shoot density, shoot turgor, or cell wall rigidity. Silica, which is deposited in epidermal cells of leaf blades, may influence cell wall rigidity. This research was conducted to determine if appilication of Si would therefore enhance turfgrass wear tolerance. This research was conducted on two seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swarts) ecotypes in Griffin, GA. Two foliar rates of potassium silicate (1.1 and 2.2 kg Si ha(⁻¹)), a soil drench rate (22.4 kg Si(⁻¹)), and a K check (15.6 kg K ha(⁻¹)) were applied biweekly. Traffic treatments were applied on two dates over the test period. Turf quality and wear tolerance were increased by application of the highest Si rate or the K treatment. The K treatment reduced wear injury from 35% to 14%, while the Si treatment reduced wear injury from 35% to 20%. Turf growth was not affected by fertility treatments." |
