Abstract/Contents:"Fungicides were evaluated for their ability to control brown patch at the Rutgers Turf Research Farm in North Brunswick, NJ on colonial bentgrass maintained under golf course fairway conditions. Turf was established Sep 1994 on a Norton loam with a pH of 6.1. Mowing was performed three times weekly at a height of 0.4 in. with clippings collected. The site was irrigated to prevent drought stress. Fertilizer was applied as 34-0-0 on 5 Apr (0.75 lb N/1000 sq ft), 20-0-20 on 28 May (0.5 lb N/1000 sq ft), 46-0-0 on 27 Jun (0.75 lb N/1000 sq ft), and 20-0-20 on 10 Sep (0.5 lb N/1000 sq ft). Weeds were controlled with Betasan 4-E (7 fl oz/1000 sq ft) on 3 May. Insect pests were suppressed with Dursban 2E (1.5 fl oz/1000 sq ft) on 11 July. Hollow tine aerification was performed on 21 May with 0.5 in. x 3.0 in. tines on 4 in. centers, and the turf was topdressed at a rate of 0.2 cu yd/1000 sq ft on 24 May. Plots were 3 ft x 9 ft and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Fungicides were applied in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1000 sq ft with a CO₂ powered sprayer at 30 psi using TeeJet 8003E nozzles. All treatments (trt) were initiated on 21 Jun and were reapplied at the appropriate intervals as indicated in the table. Percent turf area infected with R. solani was assessed on 2 Jul, 29 Jul, 9 Aug, 4 Sep, and 11 Sep. Turf color was evaluated on 16 Aug using a 1 to 10 scale, where 10=darkest green turf. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means separation by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (p=0.05) following arcsine transformation. Brown patch developed rapidly after 27 Jun. By 2 Jul, the natural infestation was evenly distributed over the test area. Excellent control was provided throughout the season by Eagle 40W + Fore 80W (trt 4), IB11924 6SC (trt 13), the 3.8 oz rate of Dacronil Ultrex 82.5WDG (trt 16), the 1.12 oz rate of CGA-BMP 46.5W (trt 26), CGA 173506 50W (trt 27), CGA 329351 2MC + Daconil 2787 4F (trt 29), Sentinel 40WG alternated with Daconil Ultrex 82.5WDG (trt 34), Heritage 50 WG (trt 38), DAS 0025 100SL (trt 42, 43), S-6806 G (trt 46, 47). When compared to individual component products alone, the combination of Eagle 40W + Fore 80W (trt 4, 5), Daconil Ultrex 82.5WDG + Banner Maxx 1.24MC (trt 18), Bayleton 25DF + Daconil Ultrex 82.5WDG (trt 35), and EXP 10715A 80WG + Dithane 75WG (trt 49) resulted in improved brown patch control. S-6873 G (trt 53, 54), Eagle 40W + FeSO₄ (trt 11, 12), CGA 173506 50W (trt 28), and Polyoxorim 2.5W + EH 1259 (trt 30) provided excellent disease control after third application on 18 July. Although phytotoxicity was not observed, turf treated with sterol inhibiting fungicides (trt 1-5, 10-12, 18, 21-24, 35-37), Daconil Ultrex 82.5WDG (trt 16, 17, 19, 20, 34), and selected experimental products (trt 13-15, 25-29, 44, 53, 54) were sigificantly greener than the untreated control on 16 Aug."
