| Abstract/Contents: | "Because of the potential to manipulate endophyte genomes by making crosses using stromata, we have initiated studies to understand factors affecting development of stromata of Atkinsonella and Epichloë" of clavicipitaceous symbionts of grasses. "Kinetin, a plant hormone belonging to the cytokinins, was found to induce the Atkinsonella to form colonies comparable to stromata as seen on plant tissues." "This research may lead to the development of cultural procedures to breed and select endophytes for specific traits of importance in turf, such as enhanced drought tolerance, insect resistance, and fungus-disease resistance." |
