| Abstract/Contents: | "Superior nitrate uptake ability will contribute to the reduction of nitrate leaching and lower N-fertilizer requirement. Selection for high nitrate uptake ability at an early developmental stage is particularly important for Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) due to its slow initial growth. This study quantified nitrate uptake by 30-day-old individual seedlings and evaluated variation in nitrate uptake rate among and within 6 cultivars. Nitrate uptake rate was determined for seedlings maintained in polystyrene cups with roots submerged in a 0.5 mM potassium nitrate +0.5 mM calcium sulfate solution, which was replaced every 24 hour for 22 days. Significant between-cultivar and within-cultivar differences were observed and attributable to differences in root length and surface area. The correlation between nitrate uptake rates at the seedling and the mature stage of the same individual will be presented." |
