Abstract/Contents:Discusses earthworm casting on fairways, "one of the most challenging management issues for superintendents in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the United States." Describes an experiment "designed to reevaluate several cultural practices that have been shown in previous research to be detrimental to earthworm activity in other regions of the world." Evaluates "soil chemistry effects, the effects of clipping removal alone and in combination with spring and spring+fall aerification, and sand topdressing alone and in combination with other fertilizer treatments to determine if sand effectively reduced casting" as well as "physical removal (harvesting) by commercial worm harvesting companies and attempting to develop efficient means for superintendents to bring worms to the surface and remove them." Reports that "the cultural factors of increasing soil acidity, applying 5/8" sand topdressing and clipping removal had no significant effects on reducing earthworm casting." Also reports that pesticide use and physical removal were effective for "immediate reductions in earthworm populations."
