Abstract/Contents:"The ability of turf to survive freezing in the spring could be a factor contributing to winter hardiness. We investigated the ability of annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass to survive simulated thawing and refreezing cycles. Two strains of annual bluegrass and a commercial cultivar of creeping bentgrass were removed from a research golf green in late March. After treatment, individual tiller viability was determined. The viability of both species decreased when they experienced both a simulated late winter and simulated thawing and refreezing cycles. No differences between species were observed. These cycles appear to be an important aspect of winter hardiness in both annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass."
