Abstract/Contents:"The study was conducted to examine effects of different mowing and irrigation practices on seasonal changes in turf and root growth of two creeping bentgrass cultivars, 'Penncross', 'Crenshaw', on a USGA-specification putting green. Two irrigation and two mowing height treatments were applied from May to October during 1997-1998. Mowing height treatments were 5/32 inch and 1/8 inch. Irrigation regimes included watering daily (replace 100% daily ET) and on alternate days. Turf maintained similar quality when irrigated daily or on alternate days during the entire growing season for both culrivars. Irrigation daily or on alternative days had no effect on rooting. Mowing at 1/8 inch caused severe decline in turf quality, root growth, leaf area index, green leaf biomass, and photochemical efficiency, especially during summer months. Lower mowing reduced rooting depth and accentuated root dieback. Raising mowing height to 5/32 inch improved turf quality and root growth."
