Abstract/Contents:"The use of inorganic soil amendments (ISA) for golf putting green construction is increasing. Long term field performance of these amendments is poorly understood. Plots were established in 1997 to compare bentgrass growth on a traditional 85% medium sand: 15% sphagnum peat (SP) rooting media to turfgrass grown on straight medium sand and two rooting media containing 85% medium sand and 15% ISA. Over the last two years, plots were evaluated for rate of establishment, turfgrass color, bulk density, root density, and moisture retention. After two years, all plots have established to acceptable levels. Plots containing SP established at a greater rate than the straight sand or the mixes containing an ISA. Also, plots with SP had greater volumetric water contents 3 and 4 days after a rain event or irrigation. Differences in turfgrass quality was noticeable, especially as available water decreases."
