| Abstract/Contents: | "Determining the source and extent of turf stress is important for turf managers, and methods which provide quantification of turf stress are needed. Spectroradiometers, which read reflectance over a range of wavelengths, offer potential for measuring turf stress. The objective of this work was to determine the suitability of a spectroradiometer for quantifying turf and soil compaction and evaluating turf quality as affected by N rate. Two studies were conducted on 'Tifway' bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis). The compaction study consisted of 5 compaction levels, and the N rate study consisted of 5 N rates applied monthly. Significant differences in compaction were achieved, as bulk density measurements had a linear increase with increasing traffic. Significant correlations were identified between sod reflectance and soil compaction in the VIS. This was in part due to a degradation in chlorophyll causing increased reflectance in the VIS." |
