| Abstract/Contents: | "Reductions in the presence of broadleaf weeds in Festuca spp. stands have been observed. This reduction may be the result of allelopathy. Bioassays of fine fescue leaf extracts were performed in petri dishes to evaluate inhibition of seed germination and seeding growth of Raphanus sativus, Lactuca sativa, and Lolium multiflorum. Inhibition of R. sativus and L. multiflorum germination and root growth was significant for Festuca longifolia Thuill. 'Spartan', 'SR3100', 'Nordic' and [']Osprey' along with Festuca rubra L. ssp. trichophylla Gaud. 'Dawson'. Shoot growth was enhanced by most leaf extracts. All hard fescue varieties inhibited L. sativa root growth, but not germination. Plant-to-plant inhibition may be caused by plant competition, endophytic fungi or allelopathy. Results of studies separating allelopathy from competition will be discussed." |
