| Abstract/Contents: | "Plugs of 25 Kentucky bluegrass cultivars, planted in 1995 and mowed at golf course fairway heights (1.9-2.2 cm), were selected from field-grown trials at Urbana, IL, and West Lafayette, IN. The objective of this study is to detrmine which, if any, of these cultivars might be successfully grown as fairway turf in the Central U.S. Tiller density, leaf texture and angle, and thatch accumulation were measured in an attempt to identify morphological characteristics that create suitable fairway conditions. In measurements collected in Urbana in August, 1998, mean tiller density ranged from 2.3 tillers/cm² for 'SR2000' to 4.5 tillers/cm² for 'North Star'. Mean leaf width (leaf 1) ranged from 1.4 mm for 'Limousine' to 2.7 mm for 'SR2000'. The mean angle of leaves 1 and 2 ranged from 37° for 'Kenblue' to 70° for 'NuGlade'. Finally, thatch accumulation ranged from 8 mm for 'Kenblue' to 18 mm for 'North Star'. Additional data collected during 1998 and 1999 will be presented." |
