| Abstract/Contents: | "The objective of this study is to assess the effects of two root zones at five moisture regimes on the agronomic characteristics of Kentucky bluegrass sod under athletic field conditions. The two root zones are sand and a sand/soil mix (90:10 by volume) that meet USGA specifications. Plots measure 3.35 m x 7.6 m with a root zone depth of 30 cm. The moisture regimes consist of plastic barrier lined profiles with water tables held at depths of 20 cm, 10 cm, 2.5 cm, 0 cm, and a USGA designed profile with root zone over a 10 cm gravel blanket. Moisture content and air-filled porosity are monitored throughout the growing season using time domain reflectometry (TDR). The agronomic effects of the treatments on color/quality, rooting, clipping yield, turf density, soil temperature, and sod/shear strength will be discussed." |
