Abstract/Contents:A general survey of sports turf in the newly-formed German states, beginning at the time of the political reunification in 1989 in light of the objectives of a sports ground network of former East Germany (turf quality, technical standardization, and plant matters). The basis for this author's writings on this subject are his research and development and planning work during the existence of former East Germany, as well as his activity as a publicly appointed and sworn expert ever since. The 1996-97 classification scheme of free sports grounds in Saxony-Anhalt approximates that of the other former East German states and signalizes that no general improvement in turf quality has yet occurred as a result of the general developments in seeding, turf regeneration and renovation, fertilization, maintenance techniques, rolled-turf application, sports turf image and economics, school sports grounds, union activities, promotion of unions, and help from professional sports unions, city administrations, and military installations (German Federal Armed Forces and Federal Border Guard). The primary reason for this lack of improvement lies in the financial problems of the communes and unions. The frequently inadequate qualification and the generally small-scale specialization result from low levels of activity in new establishment and regeneration/renovation. Economical constructions, such as so-called ground-level constructions, thinness of the topsoil, and slit drainage are moderately practiced, but drainage systems and ready-made turf are seldom used. The lack of an irrigation system complicates turf regeneration and renovation in many places. Most turf maintenance programs are simply suboptimal in general. The use of sand-based artificial turf, however, is usually not economically feasible. Critically important is the lack of concrete budgeting for local situational requirements and, in connection with that, the common insecurity regarding the implications of DIN 18,035 Section 4 of sports grounds - sports turfs. The inadequate development in professional understanding corresponds to the drawn-out boom of new establishment and maintenance. It is hoped that the German Turfgrass Association will push further and stronger to raise professional standards. In this manner, institutional and organizational fundamentals will be realized.
