Abstract/Contents: | "Pollution, nutrient loading and algal blooms have created an awareness in North Carolina heightened by massive fish kills. The Neuse River, a large and economically important river has been used as a case study. Research has shown that non-point sources are the major avenues for nutrients entering the Neuse. The role that turf plays is unclear. Publications and a slide set were released in 1996 with emphasis on common sense best management practices. In 1998, a state agency mandated a 30% reduction in nitrogen loading within the Neuse River basin by the year 2001 to reduce algal blooms. Turf managers must either complete a nutrient management training program or develop and implement a plan by 2003. A certification manual is being developed to provide training in nutrient management. A concerted research effort is underway to answer questions relative to the fate of nitrogen in turfgrasses widely grown in North Carolina." |
