| Abstract/Contents: | "Poa is a diverse genus of widely adapted, cool-season grasses containing approximately 300 species. Collectively known as bluegrasses in North America and as meadowgrasses in Europe, several species are economically important components of turf in both northern and southern temperate climates. Several economically important bluegrass species are considered non-traditonal for turf usage because either no improved cultivars exist or there are no available commercial sources. This paper describes potential uses and prospects for cultivar development of non-traditional species of bluegrass. Species covered include: Canada bluegrass (P. compressa L.), bulbous bluegrass (P. bulbosa L.), annual bluegrass (Poa annua f. reptans), Texas bluegrass (P. arachnifera Torr.), Wood bluegrass (P. nemoralis L.), Canby bluegrass [P. canbyi (Scribn.) Piper], as well as interspecific hybrids among different Poa species." |
