| Abstract/Contents: | "Sequences of the ITS1 and ITS2 regions of the ribosomal DNA locus were evaluated as a tool for identification of fine fescue selections. Sequences were obtained from 44 selections belonging to 11 different species and subspecies, collected from wild populations or old turf sites in North America, Europe, and Asia. Phylogenetic analysis divided the fine fescues into two major clades. These clades were congruent with the division of the fine fescues into F. rubra and F. ovina aggregates, which is based on morphological characteristics. Within the ovina and rubra aggregates, the maximum number of differences between selections were 18 and 19, respectively. As a result, the phylogenies provided little resolution and bootstrap support values were generally low. For these reasons, ITS sequences may not be sufficiently variable for uses as a reliable identification tool within the fine fescue aggregates." |
