| Abstract/Contents: | "Intermediate ryegrass (Lolium perenne x Lolium multiflorum) varieties were evaluated to determine if this hybrid species has desirable characteristics for turf managers in the transition zone. Seven seed lines, including two annual, two intermediate, and three perennial ryegrasses were compared in greenhouse, growth chamber, and field studies to assess morphological characteristics, turf quality, and heat tolerance of the various varieties. One variety of intermediate ryegrass ('Pick-LHRT') had morphological and physiological traits and turf performance similar to the turf-type perennial grasses, while the other intermediate ('Froghair') had characteristics more similar to annual ryegrass. Preliminary conclusions are that certain intermediate ryegrass varieties have promise for overseeding dormant turf in the transition zone. |
